Disclaimer
Last updated: January 2025
The information on Sill & Stem is published in good faith and for general informational purposes only. We test what we write about and cite reputable sources where appropriate, but every home, plant, and reader is different. Please read the sections below before acting on anything you find here.
General editorial disclaimer
Articles reflect the experience and opinions of the individual writer at the time of publishing. Care advice is a starting point, not a guarantee. Light, humidity, temperature, water quality, and pot conditions vary widely — you know your home better than we do. Use your own judgment, and when in doubt, start conservatively.
No professional horticultural advice
Sill & Stem is written by experienced hobbyists and editors, not licensed horticulturists, arborists, or agronomists. For rare, valuable, commercial, or seriously distressed plants, consult a qualified professional or your local extension service.
Pet and child safety
Many common houseplants are toxic to cats, dogs, and small children if chewed or ingested. Where we can, we flag toxicity. We do our best to be accurate, but toxicity information can change and reactions vary between animals.
- Always cross-check with the ASPCA plant toxicity database for pets.
- If you suspect a pet has ingested a plant, contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (USA: 888-426-4435).
- If a child has ingested a plant, contact Poison Control or your local emergency service immediately.
No medical advice
Nothing on Sill & Stem is medical advice. If you or someone in your household has an allergic reaction, skin irritation, or respiratory issue related to a plant, plant product, fertilizer, or pesticide, contact a qualified medical professional.
Products, tools, and chemicals
We sometimes recommend fertilizers, insecticidal soaps, neem oil, hydrogen peroxide, and other products. Always follow the manufacturer's label — it overrides anything we write. Store products out of reach of children and pets, ventilate well, wear gloves when appropriate, and test on a single leaf before treating an entire plant.
Accuracy and updates
Plant taxonomy, common names, and best-practice care evolve. We update older articles when we can, but content may become outdated. If you notice an error, please email hello@sillandstem.com and we'll take a look.
